In a recent article by 𝐇𝐞𝐭 𝐍𝐢𝐞𝐮𝐰𝐬𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐝, three leading experts, Prof. dr. Filip Lardon (UAntwerpen), Prof. dr. Karen Geboes (UZ Gent) and our own Prof. dr. Karine Breckpot (VUB) share their perspective on how cancer care is evolving.
Fifteen years ago, cancer was far ahead of us. Today that gap has narrowed, and if progress continues, we may catch up within the next 15 years, according to the experts.
They emphasize that cancer is not disappearing, but is increasingly becoming manageable. Advances in precision medicine, immunotherapy and AI are enabling more targeted treatments, while earlier detection and prevention are improving outcomes.
At the same time, they warn that rising patient numbers and the high cost of innovative treatments remain significant challenges.
Still, the direction is clear: cancer is evolving from a fatal diagnosis into a condition that can be controlled more effectively.
A hopeful, but ongoing, shift.
